Life of the Party

Full Velocity! Carpe Diem! Seize the Day! I just finished watching the Melissa McCarthy movie, ‘Life of the Party’. (Thank you Delta airlines for streaming free movies!)

So… yeah… I’m such a student that I love to learn even from entertaintment!

Now, first let me say that this movie is rated R. There is foul language, drugs and alcohol as well as sexuality throughout the movie. So, know that I am talking of my personal take on the movie and it’s message – and I understand it may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

As for me? I love puns, humor and a great message and I believe Melissa and crew did a tremendous job delivering! I enjoyed it!

Watching this movie drove home so many points, and I would like to share a few.

* Bad things will happen, but you can choose how it will affect your life.

* Just because it hasn’t been done doesn’t mean it can’t be done.

* If you have shelved a dream, you can dust it off and achieve it – you don’t have to give up on it.

* Your character can cause the most unlikely people in your life to become your biggest champion.

* A great support team can help you overcome some incredible obstacles!

Jorjia and I both have written previously about this first point, so I won’t go very in-depth with this. Just know that it isn’t what happens to us as much as it is our perception of what happened and how we react to it and how we let it shape our future.

I totally love the ‘just because it hasn’t been done doesn’t mean it can’t’ mindset! God created us with an imagination and creativity – so use them! What has been on your heart to do that you haven’t yet? Take courage and do it!

The mom, played by Melissa McCarthy, has put her dream of graduating college off for 20ish years, she decides it is time and goes back to school. I like the fact that the storyline has her going back because she wants to finish, not because others are telling her that she has to. That signifies to me that it is her dream. I think sometimes we can move towards something we feel is right, that has been promoted to us – but maybe isn’t our dream and that can be disastrous. But by the same token, we can also tuck our dreams away if we think we can’t achieve them, or that others will think we are silly. Don’t let others steal your dreams, and don’t steal theirs. It’s not too late to start chasing the future you want.

During a party at the college, whenever anyone did shots, they would yell out, “What do we want?”

“Full Velocity!” came the roar of the students.

Obviously it was part of a drinking game, but I loved the concept of asking ourselves – what do we want – and then a two word response filled with so much! Full Velocity! Charging ahead towards life! Not being slow or complacent but racing full steam ahead toward our goals and our future.

The last two points kind of tie in together – because I really feel that our character has an intricate part in our support system. Those that we associate with often times reflect our character and frequently they also become our supporters. But there are still those unlikely participants in our life that can pop up almost out of nowhere and bless us. The story depicted by Melissa shows an unexpected example of that by her receiving assistance in saving her reputation from a very unlikely source, a plot twist that I thoroughly enjoyed! Also seeing her support team come to bat for her numerous times really displayed the value of true friendships.

Well, I hope that I didn’t spoil the movie for you, should you choose to watch it, and I hope some of these takeaways help you achieve the life you’ve always wanted!

What are you dreaming of?

Have you had a movie or story that encouraged you to pursue your dreams? If so, will you share it?

Full Velocity!
