That’s Not Mine!

I reached out to a few people the other day, just to check in and say hi. This is not out of the ordinary for me. I believe it is important to reach out and let the people that we care about know we are thinking of them.

Also, I usually have pretty good intuition. When someone is on my mind – it’s usually for a reason.

Then – I was about to go to bed and within 10 minutes – 4 of the people responded and ALL 4 of them were struggling with some really heavy stuff.

I immediately felt overwhelmed. I immediately took on their emotions. I immediately felt responsible.

Immediately, I felt my energy and emotions plummet.

Luckily – I pay attention to how I’m feeling today. Today – I know how to shift my energy. I know I am not responsible for other people’s problems (unless I am, obviously.)

Luckily, today – I can catch it almost as soon as I feel my energy shift. And today, I know how to reset pretty quickly.

But I didn’t always. Not too long ago, I would let these things affect me for days. I would take on other people’s emotions and problems and carry them with me for hours, days, sometimes weeks!

But not today. Today, I know how to be present for people without absorbing their energy or claiming their problems as my own.

Here’s what I did to shift my energy back as soon as I noticed the dip.

  • I told myself “This is not my sh*t. I can be empathetic without absorbing the negative energy. This is not mine..”
  • I stood up and moved around. I literally moved my body to shift my energy.
  • I practiced some breathing exercises while I thought about all the things that are going right in my life.

Today – this was enough to get my energy and emotions back on track. Some days, I need to do more.

Gratitude lists, exercise, jumping around, singing, talking out loud to myself – these are all tools that I use to shift my energy.

Once I shifted my energy and emotions – I was able to show up for them with love and compassion. I was able to talk to them and be supportive – without draining my own energy. I show up so much better for myself and others when I am aware of my emotional state as well as my ability to shift it.

What things do you do to get back on track?

How do you know when you are not on track?

XO, Jorjia
