As I was approaching my birthday this year, I was deep in thought on a few things. Part of me wants to be like “OMG, you are almost 30 years old!” But mostly, I am feeling grateful. Because as a friend of mine pointed out; if life was fair – I would be dead. I am so glad that life isn’t fair. I am so excited for this next year of life, I am so excited that I get to choose life everyday.

For the longest time I was convinced that I was going to die at the age of 19. I don’t know where or why that belief came to me, but I can remember how it felt. I was convinced. In fact the whole year that I was 19 I actually refused to listen to the song “If I Die Young” by The Band Perry. I was honestly surprised to celebrate my 20th birthday.

I wish I could say that the thought that I would die at 19 pushed me to make great choices and get a lot done in the time that I had. But, it didn’t. In fact, more than anything I think I just resigned to it. I made a lot of bad choices, I hurt the people that loved me and I lost myself in the world of addiction. I thought that I had it all together and that I was managing fine, but that was the furthest thing from the truth.

I was lost in a darkness that I couldn’t see a way out of.

Fast forward to now – I just celebrated my 28th birthday. I own interests in multiple business. I have amazing relationships with my kids and my family knows they can count on me. I make better choices today, I don’t use drugs or alcohol and every day I do something that helps me to become a better person.

It wasn’t easy – getting from there to here – there were a lot of moments where I wanted to give up. There was a lot of pain and anger. But I didn’t give up. And I hope that you don’t give up either.

We all have our battles – we all have things that we have to face. But inside all of us – we already have what we need to get through it.
