Taste and See

Warm, inviting, just the right taste of cinnamon, the flavor of zucchini permeating the moistness of the bread, making it the perfect complement to a nice hot breakfast beverage. Then the over easy egg, the gooey yolk flowing across the plate and absorbing into the coffee cake. The firmness of the egg white, covered with the coconut oil, followed by a bite of the zucchini coffee cake. As my taste buds exploded this morning over my delicious breakfast, enjoying a quiet morning, preparing to spend time in my bible and journal; I had a thought.

“Isn’t there a scripture about tasting and seeing God is good?”

Suddenly I had this revelation. As I was enjoying the many layers of flavor and texture and temperature of my food, I realized that maybe that’s what that scripture portrays. See, I have read it a multitude of times. I think that even people who don’t read the Bible are familiar with that scripture. Possibly read those words on some Christian kitchen towel or sign. But reading and actually reading into it are two completely different things.

This morning my eyes were opened a bit more. First, of course, I asked Google where that scripture was. There are some scriptures that I have memorized including their “address” – where to find them in the Bible. But I will be honest and say that I’m pretty lazy about that.  I don’t know as much as I would like to. I’m expecting that to change, as I’m taking active steps to work on memorizing. (There’s also scripture that backs that up, that we should memorize and have His word in our heart…. but I would have to Google it to tell you where!)

So I found it – Psalm 34:8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.

Now that we know where to find that scripture I’m going to dive into a little bit more about what I learned. See, just as the flavors of my breakfast are different and the tastes, textures and temperatures were multi-layered, so is my relationship with God.

God is my safe haven. When the feels are way too strong and overwhelming, He is there for me. God being my refuge is something that I honestly don’t know how I would live without. To me a refuge is a place that you can run to in desperation, but is also a place that you can seek for rejuvenation. God does both of those for me and so much more.

God is my creator and an incredible artist. Sometimes the awe that I feel looking at the majestic world He has created leaves me speechless. One of my favorite things to do is just take quiet time out in nature, and simply be in wonder of how the world works.

God is my confidant. I can come to Him at any time and share anything. I can come in anger and frustration, fear and worry, in awe and respect, and happiness and excitement. No matter what He is there for me. Some of my most favorite times have been when I have come to Him just so grateful for the blessings I have. But I can tell you there have also been times that I have yelled at Him, telling Him that I don’t understand and I don’t agree with what’s happening – but I know no matter what He is in charge and He loves me. God sees the full picture while we only see a piece of the puzzle – that is an analogy that has brought me through many a confusing moment.

Understanding the importance of having a personal relationship with God is something that has become so very clear to me. It’s why I feel we were created; to have an intricate relationship with Him.

I really don’t know how I would function and get by day by day without it. The hope that I’m infused with of an eternity with Him helps me overcome many of life‘s challenges and difficulties.

Just like my breakfast, quiet time spent with God nourishes me. But also just like taking the time to make a healthy breakfast and eat it, I also have to make sure to be intentional and get time with God.

So my friend, if you don’t have a personal relationship with God…..

If the things that I have talked about have stirred something in your heart, maybe something that’s been missing….

Then I invite you to take time with God.

My belief is: acknowledging that Jesus (the son of God) was born, died, and rose again – giving us salvation. (Salvation = saving us from sin and reconnecting us with God)

Receiving salvation is as simple as saying “Jesus, I give you my heart.” And sincerely believing.

That is just the beginning of a conversation that will continue forever.

I recommend finding a church that can help you solidify your relationship with Him, that can surround you with others to support you and that can help you find the answers to the questions you have in the Bible.

Then you too can taste and see that the Lord is good! 😁

Enjoy! Your friend, Amy
